NA-MIC, MITK and CTK: Joint Hands-on-Workshop on Image-Guided Therapy

  • About the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing: Over the past eight years, the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NA-MIC), one of the seven National Centers for Biomedical Computing (NCBC), part of the NIH Roadmap for medical research, has focused its efforts on the transfer of the latest advances in biomedical image analysis to the clinical and scientific community, through the development and dissemination of open source tools. As part of the NA-MIC toolkit, the 3D Slicer open-source software has been developed as a technology delivery platform that is both easy to use for clinical researchers, and easy to extend for software developers. To foster the translation of NA-MIC technology to clinical research applications, the NA-MIC Training Core has developed a series of courses and tutorials on medical image analysis topics using NA-MIC open-source tools. The goal of this workshop is to provide the members of the CARS community with a practical experience of the image processing and 3D visualization capabilities of NA-MIC tools for image-guided therapy research. The workshop is intended for clinicians and engineers, and will combine a series of lectures and hands-on sessions on image-guided therapy.
  • About the MITK (Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit) open-source environment: The Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit has been published and released as open-source software to the public in 2005. It started primarily as a toolkit, combining and extending ITK and VTK to support the development of interactive applications for medical image analysis. Since then it was continuously extended on the toolkit level, today covering a broad range of topics in biomedical image analysis and intervention support. A flexible application framework was added, the underlying plugin mechanisms were integrated in the Common Toolkit (CTK). It enables the developer both to create custom applications or extend the MITK Workbench application. The MITK Workbench provides functionality for DICOM image handling, visualization and segmentation. It serves as a usable tool for clinical users and as a versatile platform for developers.
    In the workshop an introduction to the MITK Workbench and its CTK-based extension mechanisms will be given. A special focus will be placed on the modules for image-guided therapy (MITK-IGT), range imaging support (MITK-ToF) and ultrasound navigation (MITK-US), complemented with some live demonstrations.


The workshop will be held as part of the 27th International Congress on Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS 2013)

Preparation for the Workshop

The workshop combines oral presentations and instructor-led hands-on sessions with the participants working on their own laptop computers. A technical training staff will be providing one-to-one assistance as needed. All participants are required to come with their own computer and install the Slicer version 4.2.1 software and the White Matter Exploration dataset.

Windows, Linux or MacOS Lion are supported. A minimum of 4GB of RAM (8 GB or more are recommended) and a dedicated graphic accelerator with 1GB of on board graphic memory are required.
