Back to BIDMC Imaging Resources

The goal is to provide state-of-the-art small animal imaging services to researchers in the Longwood Medical Area of Harvard Medical School. These services include multi-modality imaging, advanced data analysis, image fusion resources, and a satellite animal facility for longitudinal studies.
During design of the Longwood SAIF, we solved the logistical problems of importing animals from other institutions and have developed a streamlined system to expedite the movement of animals into the facility. The new, long-term satellite animal facility is now open.

Instrumentation

  • CRI Maestro Multi-spectral fluorescence.
The Maestro® system is unlike most fluorescent systems because it can perform spectral unmixing and multiplexing. This enables the user to ‘remove’ autofluorescence from an image and to perform imaging using multiple fluorescent signals simultaneously.
  • Xenogen IVIS-50 bioluminescence.

Field of View (length x width): 5 cm X 5 cm to 12 cm X 12 cm (variable zoom), Resolution: 50 to 400 μm (based on zoom lens position), Sensitivity: 100 photons/s/cm2, Scan Time: 1 to 5 min, Reconstruction Time: 1 to 30 sec. Maximum whole Mice per Scan: 3

  • Bioscan NanoSPECT/CT

Helical Scanning: Maintenance-free high-precision mechanical gantry with self-calibrated helical scanning. Detector Active Area: Four broadband Nal(TI) SPECT detectors with an active FOV of 215 mm x 215 mm. Detector Energy Range: 25–250 keV. Image Gating: Cardiac

  • Mosaic HP Preclinical PET system

Detector Bore Size (i.e., maximal width of animal): 18 cm diameter circle. Transaxial Field-of-View (i.e., width of animal actually imaged): 10 cm. Axial Field-of-View (i.e., the length of the animal imaged with one bed position): 11.9 cm. Spatial Resolution: 1.6mm -1.9 mm FWHM at center of Transaxial FOV. System Sensitivity: 3.6%. Average Energy Resolution: 17%

  • Bioscan NanoPET/CT

PET Detector: Crystal material: LYSO, Crystal Thickness (mm): 13, Crystal Pixel Size (mm): 1.12x1.12, Number of Crystals: 39,780, Packing Fraction (%): 92, PS-PMTs (256 channel): 24, Axial FOV (mm): 95, Extended Axial FOV (mm): 300 (With translational motion), Transaxial FOV (mm): 94, Bore size (mm): 150, Sensitivity at CFOV (%): 8.3 (250-750keV window), Resolution at CFOV (mm): <1.2 (Filtered Back Projection), NEC mouse: 720kcps.
X-ray CT System: Energy range (kV): 35-90, Tube Power (W): 8, Max. Tube Current (μA): 180, Focal Spot Size (μm): 5(@4W) 9(@8W) Detector:, Detector Material: Gd2O2S, Detector Size (mm 2 ): 50x175 Variable Zoom, Transaxial FOV (mm): 35-120, Voxel Size (μm): 9-37 Helical Scanning, Axial FOV (mm): 300, Scout scanning capability, Closed Cabinet X-ray System
