* In summary, for the first iteration of the new GPU raycasting:
 +
** Latest VTK may provide sufficient hooks to modify GLSL of the raycast volume shader.
 +
** The group will provide simple examples that should be easy to implement with the new functionality and verify that it is indeed the case. If not, we will create a pull request with the function added to the GPU raycast shader to be able to inject GLSL code.
 +
** Creating the shader code may still be complicated. Kitware will propose a high level GLSL API to facilitate the process and will submit to this group for feedback.
 +
** Multiple volume support is in development at Kitware.
 +
** Kitware will consider enabling context sharing across mappers and widgets. SINTEF will create a pull request in VTK with their implementation of the concept.
 +
* New VTK-m may be a solution for GPU volume processing in the long term.

Project Description

Objective Approach and Plan Progress and Next Steps

Develop a specification for the next generation of GPU volume processing and rendering in VTK and Slicer

The specification should support

  • Multiple input volumes for ray-casting and slice-based volume rendering
  • GPU-based volume slicing and compositing
  • Programmable volume rendering shader
  • Smart management of volumes in GPU memory
  • Possibility to run simple processing operations on the volume (e.g. Non-linear transforms)
  • Consider possible complications
    • GPU features not available / software only fallback
    • Volumes too big to for GPU memory

Compare the architectures of different existing projects where parts of the required functionality has been implemented:

Determine a sensible way to integrate all those contribution in VTK.

  • Minutes of the meeting held during project week at the bottom of this page
  • In summary, for the first iteration of the new GPU raycasting:
    • Latest VTK may provide sufficient hooks to modify GLSL of the raycast volume shader.
    • The group will provide simple examples that should be easy to implement with the new functionality and verify that it is indeed the case. If not, we will create a pull request with the function added to the GPU raycast shader to be able to inject GLSL code.
    • Creating the shader code may still be complicated. Kitware will propose a high level GLSL API to facilitate the process and will submit to this group for feedback.
    • Multiple volume support is in development at Kitware.
    • Kitware will consider enabling context sharing across mappers and widgets. SINTEF will create a pull request in VTK with their implementation of the concept.
  • New VTK-m may be a solution for GPU volume processing in the long term.
