Harvard Translational Imaging Consortium Meeting Minutes March 8, 2010

1. Consultations update

• This week we had 3 new requests, two about preclinical imaging from investigators who attended the small animal imaging workshop and one from someone who learn about the MRI mock magnet during the MRI safety course Valerie gave on March 3 at MGH.

2. Presentation of medical informatics progress

• Yong gave a presentation to the group about the progress of the medical informatics projects (deployment of XNAT at different institutions)

3. Y4 Budget justification

• The consultants are asked to prepare vignettes about consultations leading to success stories.
• The goal of the imaging consortium is to create a better integration for young people who want to use imaging.
• The group will review the consultations and see how many could be multi-institutional. Gordon mentioned that there are already 2 projects on sleep apnea (1 at MGH and 1 pediatric) that are worth connecting.
• Instead of being modality centric, we must evolve to become disease centric. In order to educate investigators in that direction, Ivan will coordinate an angiogenesis 1 day workshop with experts from the different institutions.

4. Update on MRI compatible physiological monitors

• Due to budget restriction, the imaging consortium will no longer support the installation and maintenance of the mRI compatible physiological monitors. The systems will be handed to the different institutions (CHB, BIDMC, BWH) and Valerie will organize training for the users.

5. Update on current education offerings and planning for future offerings

• Valerie already gave 2 out of 3 lectures of the "Imaging Basics for Research Staff" at MGH, The series is also scheduled at BWH (and advertised through the Harvard Catalyst website), starting on March 23.
• Ivan will put together a proposal for the one-day angiogenesis intensive training.
• Randy will coordinate the efforts for the fMRI sessions
• Jeff is in contact with Ted Treves from the Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine to develop a molecular imaging curriculum
• Simon is ready to do a workshop about segmentation/validation with his new software suite.
• Ron suggested to run more advanced Slicer training for people who are already users or already took the basics tutorials.

6. Launch of GRASP program

• Valerie suggested that the group should take a look at the new Harvard Catalyst program: http://catalyst.harvard.edu/services/grasp/. The focus is the transition from K to R funding for young investigators.

7. RSNA 2011: deadline for abstract submission: March 31

• Everybody agreed to propose that since we got great reviews from the audience,we would like to offer again for RSNA 2011 the 3 courses we offered last year:
  • The two hands-on courses: 3D Interactive Visualization of DICOM Images for Radiology Applications and Quantitative Medical Imaging for Clinical Research and Practice
  • The informatics course: Lifecycle of an imaging biomarker: from validation to dissemination
