1. Update on imaging consultation requests
- There was no new consultation this week
- Valerie will create a new project in JIRA to collect all the work done on the creation of a DCE-MRI module in Slicer
2. MRI safety
- During the review of the slides, Jeff had a question about SAR values at the different institutions. So far in the slides we listed the FDA guidelines but Valerie will create a table with the values recommended at each institutions.
- Bob mentioned that the value we want to collect is the so-called first control zone. It is determined by the manufacturer, in compliance with the FDA and the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) recommendations. Usually the only time one will go higher is during a clinical scan if the benefits are worth the increased risk. For research purpose, one will always stay below the first control zone.
- The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA), a division of NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association ) has published standards pertaining to magnetic resonance imaging systems. The MS 8-2008, Characterization of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for MRI Systems describes calorimetric and pulse-energy methods for the determination of SARs in either a phantom or a patient. Both methods are described in this standard; either method may be chosen. The results from either method may then be extrapolated to other scan parameters and even to other waveforms.
- Randy had her first meeting as member of the CTSA Imaging Working Group Steering Committee. She talked about our MRI safety material and it generated a lot of interest. She proposed to offer this material at the CTSA national level. All the members of the consortium agreed.
