Harvard Translational Imaging Consortium Meeting Minutes September 29, 2009

In attendance:

  • Valerie Humblet
  • Gordon Harris
  • Jeff Yap
  • Mark Anderson
  • Randy Gollub
  • Yong Gao
  • Annick Van den Abbeele
  • Gordon Williams
  • Bill Hanlon
  • Simon Warfield
  • Laura Alice
  • Clare Tempany
  • Ron Kikinis
  • Charles Guttmann
  • Bruce Rosen

1. Update on imaging consultation requests

  • There was no new consultation posted through the website this week
  • Valerie will create a new project in JIRA for a consultation addressed directly to Gordon Harris

2. Time tracking system

  • The issue of how to keep track of the hours spend on Catalyst activities was brought.
    • Right now there is no mechanism implanted and it is usually not in the academic culture to keep track of the hours spent on different projects. Although, when academics collaborate with industry, there is a time tracking system in place.
    • If the Catalyst plans to implement such a system, they will need to create policies at the top level (senior leadership) and create the infrastructure.

3. ACRIN meeting

  • Randy and Jeff are finishing their slides for the ACRIN meeting. The slides will be posted online after the meeting, Valerie will provide the link.
  • The PET/CT viewer in Slicer will not be ready for ACRIN.
  • The DCE-MRI data set is a bit limiting, it is a good example of why we really need standardization. Clare offered tho share some prostate cancer data set. She already has slides ready.
  • Bruce will contact Greg Sorensen regarding brain tumor. He has a lot of data related to a BIRN trial (standardization: head position, receiver coil, distortion correction, sequence parameters). Karl Helmer is also a valuable person to contact for those data.

4. New IT weekly meeting

  • A new weekly meeting of the informatics subgroup is set up: every Tuesday 10:30-11:30 am at Countway. Valerie will tale care of booking a room. As Bruce mention, this ARRA supplement is a high profile activity, we have only one chance to do it right.
  • Bruce suggested that adding a senior person with experience in multi-institutions software venture would be very valuable. Ron is willing to participate to the project but he suggested to contact Steve Piper who has a lot of experience in the domain.
  • Charles'team, Gordon Harris and Bill will also be part of the project.

5. Hiring of new IT engineer

  • Randy sent a formal offer letter to a IT engineer. So far the offer is not attached to a specific institution, that will be decided later.

6. Upcoming COC meeting

  • The agenda for the next COC meeting is the pilot grants: should they be divided into different pots?
    • It is a very good opportunity for the imaging consortium to reiterate their demand for pilot grants to fund imaging.
    • Gordon Williams asked the group to send them examples of investigators who, thanks to seed money for scans, where able to get funded and to launch a successful career.

7. News from MIT

  • John Gabrieli at MIT hired a new programmer to develop XNAT at MIT. We will connect with that person. It is a good thing for Catalyst to support MIT also.
