Joint Meeting with the Harvard CTSC Informatics Group Meeting Minutes October 28, 2008

In Attendance:

  • From the Imaging Consortium
    • Randy Gollub
    • Carolyn Zyloney
    • Bruce Rosen
    • Jeff Yap
    • Bill Hanlon
    • Gordon Williams
  • From the Informatics/IT Group
    • Isaac Kohane (chair)
    • Any other names I should list?

The meeting took place in Harvard's Countway Library and lasted approximately 40 minutes.

The Imaging Consortium's Informatics needs were the primary agenda topic for discussion at this meeting.

Randy, Bruce, Jeff, Bill, and Carolyn represented the Imaging Consortium.

The Imaging Group has created a 5 page proposal of the Imaging Informatics XNAT plan, which has been circulated to the Informatics Group for refinement.

Shawn Murphy, Randy, Bruce, and Bill gave a presentation of the XNAT proposal to the Informatics Group. The proposal was received favorably by the group.

The presentation focused on

  • the details for implementation of the harmonization of XNAT software within each site
    • The creation of the XNAT-i2b2 system is particularly valuable for Children's Hospital, which needs a medical imaging data management system for their clinical trials
    • BIDMC may have some incompatibility issues with XNAT
  • the importance of tackling up front the ability for XNAT to interface with the Radiology department's PACs systems
  • the value of XNAT for extracting annotations and clinically relevant meta-data from DICOM files
    • XNAT can also be useful in the de-identification of patient information

i2b2 will allow for running queries for clinical data using search criterion

The Imaging Consortium members and the Informatics team will meet with key people at each institution to discuss the Informatics proposal and gain site approval

  • Bill Hanlon will talk with Jim Murray, who is the chief person at the BIDMC
  • Shawn Murphy and Diane Keogh will speak with Brent ____ from PHS
  • Are there any other key people that Imaging Consortium members should meet with to discuss the Informatics proposal?

When this proposal is finalized, Zak will help to present this proposal to the top level of the CTSA for approval.

If this proposal is approved, it will initiate the hire of 2 new personnel:

  • One FTE will be hired through CTSC Central to support XNAT-i2b2 integration
  • An additional FTE, an XNAT engineer, will be hired through the Imaging Group and will work to interface XNAT and the user community.
