Diffusion Tensor Imaging Workshops: A Training Initiative for Exploring Brain Connectivity

Sonia Pujol , Ph.D., Department of Radiology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Ron Kikinis , M.D., Department of Radiology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Randy Gollub , M.D., Ph.D., Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Learning Objectives:

Through the exemplar case of reconstructing the inferior occipito-frontal fasciculus using Diffusion Tensor Imaging tractography, we’ll demonstrate 1) the teaching methodology that we have been developing based on the three identified requirements for translating Diffusion Tensor Imaging techniques to new skills of clinical researchers; 2)the open-source software platform that we use to provide hands-on training for the extraction of white matter pathways from DT-MRI images; 3)the variety of challenges posed by technology transfer from the biomedical image computing community to the next generation of physicians and clinical researchers.
