Harvard Translational Imaging Consortium Meeting Minutes February 10, 2009

1. IRAT/CTSA Joint Workshop March 29-31,2009 in Baltimore

• Randy contacted Dan Sullivan regarding sending several of our members and also two additional collaborators who have particular expertise in areas relevant to the planned discussion.
  • He welcomed our proposition to have Shawn Murphy and Karl Helmer give a talk about XNAT-PACS-i2b2 integration and cross site calibration for MRI studies- structural and DTI respectively.
  • Dan and his collaborators are working on the meeting schedule and will get in touch with Randy.
• For reimbursement for travel expenses...

2. Slides for CTSC imaging consortium presentation

• Valerie sent two sets of slides for the members to review. One is for the Radiology Department Heads meetings and is called: Development of Harvard Catalyst Imaging Consultation Service. The second one is for the smaller meetings and is called Harvard Catalyst Imaging Consultation Service.
  • The presentations were sent to the members using the HMS secure file transfer. It will be our tool of choice to share large files in the future, everybody having easy access to that service.
  • Members are invited to look at the slides and send Valerie their feedback.
• Simon is giving a talk at a faculty meeting at Children's at the end of February and he asked if he could get a time slot to present the imaging consultation service. If approved, he will be joined by Randy or Bruce and Valerie to present.

3. XNAT engineer position

• Laura sent the job description to the HR department at Children's hospital and asked them to post it on their web site.
• The consortium invited him a candidate with very good expertise and excellent recommendation for a round of interviews in Boston.

4. Educational program

Catalyst Central asked the consortium to provide them with a calendar for the educational program asap.

• The Consortium agreed that the audience for these courses is broad and has a very variable imaging background. There is a need for several levels of teaching.
• Basic imaging training:
  • Valerie and Jeff will work on an Imaging101 nanocourse. Jeff already has several lectures ready.
  • Bob suggested to contact Steven Stufflebeam and David A. Boas at HST and asked them about their Imaging Biophysics and Clinical Applications course. Randy will contact them.
  • The Office for Human Research Studies (OHRS) supports and manages the Scientific Review Committees and the Institutional Review Boards (IRB) for Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. According to Jeff, they would be a very good audience because they have been asking for some training on the basics of imaging. The same talk should be given at each institution, it is easier to get the audience when it is in their location.
• More advanced training:
  • Randy proposed a hands-on course on analyzing medical imaging data.
  • Bob would like to give a course on imaging perfusion and angiogenesis.
  • Ron emphasized the importance of targeting the translational projects. It is important to teach the engineers and the clinicians who to work together.
• Each course will be offered at 2 sites, once at MGH main campus on Fruit Street and once at HMS in Longwood.

5. Update on the cross-sites medical imaging file transfer

• The group agreed that the first issue to be presented should be inter-institutional transfer of data.
  • The difficulty with transferring data between the TIMC and Children's Hospital is a good case example of an informatics policy issue that the group wishes to solve.
  • Simon, Bill and Rudoplph Pienaar (MGH) are working together with the collaboration of Shawn Murphy on a simple system to transfer imaging data from the Martino Center to Children's hospital.
  • Rudolph created a WIKI page (password protected) describing the whole project in details. All the members will received an invitation to get access to that WIKI page.
• Randy was contacted by James Ross (BWH) about our XNAT project. He would like to set up a simple XNAT Enterprise project here in Boston that will allow him to transfer datasets between the Brigham and National Jewish (Denver).
  • Randy will put him in contact with Simon, Rudolph and Bill to share what we have accomplished so far.

6. Catalogue of imaging resouces

• Valerie will get in touch with the IT people at Catalyst Central to discuss available tools to create a searchable database with the imaging technologies and expertise the Imaging Consortium has to offer.
